Donnell Nocella: For READING, vertical style is said to be easier, while horizontal style is more common in writing. I've heard vertical style is better when you write to someone in formal situations. (incl. when writing an envelope) I think it's only Japanese classes that require students to write vertically in schools....Show more
Neely Youngblut: In Japanese we write vertically and from right to left.e.gA YS AW HE OR OS(This is the "general layout'" i.e books, etc.etc. However, on things like websites or in schools or children's books, it is written left to right horizontally (like I'm writing now.) It doesn't really matter that much if it is horizontal / vertical because both are used. Now, with numbers they're both the same but obviously pronounced differently:ä¸ãäºãä¸ãåãäº"ãå ãä¸ãå «ãä¹ãåThen åä¸ãåäºãåä¸ etc.So yeah. Numbers are written the exact same....Show more
Nadia Crauswell: All forms of Japanese! writing style is used. Vertically and horizontally, including right to left and left to right. Manga tends to be vertical, but essays stories, etc can be done in any number of ways, and you will see them in all formats. When writing numbers, most Japanese will use standard arabic script (same numerals used in English) one is 1 , three is 3 , one hundred is 100 , more often then not when writing. Written numbers all in Chinese format is possible and yes they are pretty much in the same format if someone wanted to use it instead of arabic numerals....Show more
Carolynn Testani: They use both horizontal and vertical! The vertical style is the traditional one. They write from right to left. In school Japanese class books are in vertical style, while others are in horizontal style. The horizontal style is gaining popularity, but vertical one is not going out of style. Graduation diplomas are in vertical style ,btw. It sometimes depends on the person's preference. But whe! n it comes to school essays, it is vertical most of the time. ! Comic books usually in vertical, so are poems, like haiku for example. Yeah, I believe the numbers are the same, since Japanese characters derive from China. If you don't know that......Show more
Hans Sachetti: As to vertically or horizontally, most people above are correct. But as to the way of writing numbers in kanji characters, Japanese and Chinese are different (although we use similar letters).Ex. 12,000 is ä¸ä¸äºå (Japanese) / ä¸è¬å ©å (Chinese)114 is ç¾åå (Japanese) / ä¸ç¾ä¸åå (Chinese)...Show more
