Myriam Hetjonk: Far too many people actually don't want to use drugs or alcohol. They HAVE to. They NEED to. When the reality of a life is worse than a wide awake nightmare-----with no avenue of escape-----drug addiction and alcoholism is only a small step above an actual suicide. The altered consciousness, induced by the drugs and/or alcohol is only a temporary escape from a painful reality, but it is a necessary step-----if the person is to continue to live. When a person believes they have no help and no hope-----THAT is the mental disease. They use drugs and alcohol to " treat " their symptoms. It is not their choice.
